The Effortless Wave: A Camberwell Styling Guide

The 'effortless' wave takes a little technique. Here's the exact three-step routine we use on clients at Hair by Sha Camberwell.

1. Prep on damp hair

Work a lightweight mousse or wave spray through damp hair, then rough-dry with your fingers until 80% dry.

2. Wrap, don't curl

Wrap 1-inch sections around a 32mm curling wand, alternating direction. Leave the ends out for a softer, more editorial finish.

3. Set, then break up

Let the curls cool completely, then rake through with your fingers and a light texture spray. That final break-up is what makes them look lived-in, not done. Cool-setting is the step most people skip — the disulphide bonds that hold a curl in place only lock as the hair returns to room temperature. If you brush it out while it's still warm, it drops within the hour.

The most common reason a wave falls flat by lunchtime is over-conditioned hair — too much slip and there's nothing for the curl to grip. On the night before, wash and blow-dry as normal but skip a heavy mask. In the morning, work a small amount of mousse or salt spray through mid-lengths before you begin. If you want the style to last into the evening, sleep with waves pinned loosely on top of your head in soft claw clips, then release and finger-rake in the morning.
